My most recent sixth novel of the Other Worldly series, Altogether Alien, contains a great deal of snark about “Beware of the Kraken!” In reality it’s not a Nordic Sea monster in the water that threatens us all, it’s five scrofulous sharks on the not-so-supreme court who represent a decided threat to all water bodies and human bodies contaminated as a result of their most recent legal corruption.
We now have a new low of gobsmacking greed, pernicious vice, and astounding religious hypocrisy. I’ve long wanted to ask such anti-environmentalists who also claim to be devout, if you believe your god created Earth, then why on earth are you doing your damndest to destroy it? And what happened to thou shalt not kill?
This marauding majority of SCOTUS is flat-out hazardous to our health.
The latest maniacal missive is a 5-4 decision known as Sackett v. EPA. It’s catastrophic for water protection in the US. Yet, water is the very essence of life. Lest anyone think it’s merely another natural resource for rightwing christo fascists to profit from.
This Alito-penned decision narrowed protections for wetlands, exposing a vital natural resource for things like flood control to further exploitation from relentless filling and development.
Franklin D. Roosevelt could easily have been referring to our current alt-rightwing-stacked Court when he said, “We must especially beware of the small group of men who would clip the wings of the American eagle to feather their own nests.”
Small men and one woman (Barrett) exhibiting religious fanaticism with their small minds who clearly cannot or will not grasp the very words of Pope John Paul II: “The earth will not continue to offer its harvest, except with faithful stewardship. We cannot say we love the land and then take steps to destroy it for use by future generations.”
This latest travesty of supposed legal reasoning (the autocratic majority in SCOTUS has apparently killed off the use of reason too) guts the Clean Water Act (otherwise known as the Federal Water Pollution Control Act) in favor of their prolifically polluting corporate criminal pals. All at the expense of public health and vital ecosystems.
Five duplicitous justices of SCOTUS don’t seem to have a clue, or give a damn, about anything that helps or protects others, instead they diligently render their twisted version of law to continue raking in money for those who bought their seats on the bench.
But those fraudulent five will preach about how they’re pro-life. Professing to have strong faith in a god they insist created all the water bodies of this planet.
What comes to mind here is how Arianna Huffington once snarked, “Why worry about minor little details like clean air, clean water, safe ports and the safety net when Jesus is going to give the world an Extreme Makeover: Planet Edition right after he finishes putting Satan in his place once and for all?”
Besides, as I said in my nonfiction tome, Raising Questions: Daring to Denounce the Religious Right to Defend Our Civil Rights, what happened to “God helps those who help themselves? And I don’t mean help themselves to a horrific heaping of greed and selfishness.”
In reality these SCOTUS members’ wealthy benefactors (it should be no surprise that Thomas was one of the pathetic lending his name to this decision) targeted the Environmental Protection Agency long ago. Because, how dare government officials with scientific expertise on the environment tell corporate marauders that they can’t render water bodies toxic to humans and other living things?
How dare the EPA seek to protect vital ecosystems that sustain the very substance necessary to life for us all?
I write about environmental issues and the folly of humans who would devastate our planet for personal gain in my Other Worldly novels, but this maliciously stacked SCOTUS is a villain led by Alito that surpasses any I or others might have imagined for the pages of fiction.
These pathetic excuses for justices also claim to care about children, both born and “unborn.” But if they did, they’d be more concerned about things like toxic water and those who pollute it. They’d heed the words of a fellow Republican, Theodore Roosevelt:
Here is your country. Cherish these natural wonders, cherish the natural resources, cherish the history and romance as a sacred heritage, for you children and your children’s children. Do not let selfish men or greedy interests skin your country of its beauty, its riches or its romance.”
The only thing Roberts, Alito, Thomas, Gorsuch, and Barrett seem to cherish and apparently hold sacred is their unholy power and the almighty dollar. The ultimate swamp/sea monsters protecting the polluting predators that put them on the Court.
This decision clearly sends their dubious yet steadfast message: to hell with Earth or anyone else on it but them and theirs.
