Crying colors of the flag

Yard Signs Advertising Racists Supporting a Traitor

In my upcoming Other Worldly novel, Aliens Watch, I created a violent, anti-alien, unpatriotic group called Patriots Glare, a play on words from rockets’ red glare in our US national anthem. Uncanny, as my protagonist Rowan Layne would say.

Because I recently learned that the (now delayed) book about Project 25, a maniacal white nationalist blueprint for our nation, is titled Dawn’s Early Light. Go figure. It’s almost as if it’s too easy to figure out how villainous un-American minds work to manipulate those who choose to remain mindless.

Speaking of mindless, the current Republican vice presidential candidate wrote the forward for that book. A book the media obtained advance copies of despite Heritage Foundation efforts to squirrel it away until after the election. It’s horrific, vile stuff, for which all involved should be ashamed.

But they’re not. Even as it’s coming to dawn’s early light what these despicable minions are really up to, and who they really are. Fascists who seek to destroy our democracy, replacing it with a religious autocracy akin to the Taliban—especially when it comes to females.

It’s been sickening watching MAGA cult members have meltdowns on social media now that the rest of us are pointing out what they stand for and who they truly are. Instead of owning up to their unpatriotic gambit, they’re busy attacking everything that’s good while utterly failing to recognizing themselves as bad.

Blaming everyone but themselves for their own duplicitous stupidity. Because that’s what they do. It’s as simple as right and wrong, something a MAGA moron they will never grasp, or choose to.

Like the reality that it’s downright unpatriotic and uncivil to fly an American flag accompanying Trump signs in their yards. These signs, with American flags, keep cropping up in my over-55 community. These signs do nothing more than blatantly advertise the homeowners to be racists supporting a traitor.

I didn’t live in this community during the 2020 presidential election, so I don’t know if there were as many displays of outright idiocy supporting fascism. It’s disheartening, because on Twitter, folks from deeply red states and communities are reporting that, where there once were many Trump signs and flags, there now remains only a handful.

I wish I could say the same in North Las Vegas, though I have yet to see a Trump flag along with the signs in my gated community. Maybe that message got through their thick skulls, that such flags were a desecration of the American flag, but I doubt it. Because they still choose to think the American flag is appropriate alongside a sign supporting racist misogynist men who would destroy our democracy for their own personal gain—and to stay out of prison.

I saw far too many Trump flags in 2020 while renting a house in a predominantly Black neighborhood, five miles from where I live now. White nationalists moved into that community to intimidate, with their huge pickup trucks sporting customized license plates clearly indicating they were white nationalists—and violent, dangerous racists. Shame on the State of Nevada for allowing such hate-spewing messages. Shame on the police for letting them set off illegal cherry bombs hour upon hour, night after night, month after month.

That’s one of the things, in particular, that bothers me about my diverse over-55 neighborhood having Trump signs. These racists move here from somewhere other than Nevada, apparently having no clue that North Las Vegas has historically been a haven for Black and Latin families who were not necessarily safe or welcome to live in Las Vegas proper and surrounding communities (Henderson is called Hendertucky for a reason).

It’s bad enough that many of these imbeciles can’t or won’t pronounce Nevada correctly, but they move here thinking that they are entitled to more consideration and community amenities than residents who have lived in North Las Vegas long before this over-55 community existed. I know this because I hear what they have to say, what they spew, at community meetings. It’s always Fox News talking points, and it often involves nasty commentary on the homeless, including claiming they are all “illegal” immigrants.

They might as well wear a sign that says racist supporting a traitor to go along with the signs in their yards. Or tattoo dangerously stupid on their foreheads. Except they don’t need to, because it’s evident the minute they open their hateful mouths.

This while they have the nerve to claim they are patriotic Americans who support veterans and “the troops.” This while they hate the federal government without realizing that land comprising the State of Nevada is 80 percent owned by the Department of Interior, specifically the Bureau of Land Management, and the Department of Defense. Oh and it somehow escapes them that the military is part of the federal government.

I now have a Harris/Walz sign displayed in my front window, not in my yard, mostly due to high desert winds but also because I am fully aware that not only do MAGA morons in Nevada believe it is their Second Amendment right to shoot anyone they please, they also think the First Amendment only applies to them and their beliefs, whether it’s free speech or free exercise of religion. Hence, I would fully expect them to remove my sign the same way they help themselves to the use of my garbage cans on trash day. The overweening sense of old white male entitlement is astounding, and disgusting.

I am grateful for a few other Democratic signs displayed in my community, especially the one proclaiming: Harris/Walz 2024 Save Our Democracy. That’s what this is all about, make no mistake. What these Project 25 monsters have planned is far worse than anything fictional I could create in my Other Worldly novels, and it’s already been done before, in other nations not keen on democracy.

But we’re not going back. And we will save our democracy.
